While Board level systems for governance, assurance and risk management are essential for demonstrating high quality and safe care, the critical point for delivery is the front line. Local managers and lead clinicians are now tasked with knowledge, skills and competency challenges ranging from staff motivation to data analysis. Core to these is the ability ot understand risk in any care or practice setting, to implement and maintain the activities necessary to manage risk, and to communicate this appropriately throughout the organisation. The workshop will take into account the national requirements and initiatives for safe practice from the NHSLA, NRSLA, CQC and QIPP, as well as the principles of sound risk management and assurance practice. It will provide clinical managers with the knowledge and confidence to lead the approach to patient safety locally. It is designed to be of value to participants from both acute and community health settings, as well as to those from commissioning organisations who will link with service leads to understand good practice in local risk assessment and management. It will be interactive and involve a range of case studies and scenarios on practical risk assessment and quality impact assessment.

Most hospitals in the UK have an Acute Medical Unit (AMU), providing high quality, multi-professional care for patients admitted to hospital as emergencies. Those of us who work in the speciality can see the benefits which the AMU and its hardworking staff can provide to patients on a daily basis. However beyond our walls, there is often a poor understanding of the concept of acute medicine. The Society wants to raise awareness of our specialty, so that, in the future the term ‘acute medicine’ will be as familiar to patients and NHS staff as any other aspect of hospital care. In addition to raising awareness of the speciality we believe this will be a great opportunity for AMUs to raise charity funds for the unit, which can be used for equipment, training and other educational activities. We would like as many units as possible to get involved, in order to try to spread the ‘acute medicine message’ to all parts of the UK.

Safeguarding vulnerable people is complex, frequently under review and we must ensure that it will work effectively. The final report of the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust Public Inquiry recommends that all healthcare should be patient centred and we will be working with all our partners to ensure that this is achieved for all vulnerable people. Organisations need to promote a culture where staff feel able to raise concerns and whistleblow without fear and that there is an understanding of the need for staff support to achieve effective outcomes for vulnerable people. It is important to remember that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.

The appropriate, legal use of control and restraint is necessary in many clinical settings. However, inappropriate use, and the lack of detailed documentation of decisions, can make healthcare professionals vulnerable to accusations of mistreatment. This training day will look at control and restraint in the context of the Human Rights Act, the Mental Health Act, the Mental Capacity Act and other relevant legal and ethical principles.

This master class will encourage nurses who are responsible for the assessment of older people to ‘think outside the box’ beyond the normal formalities of form filling to question what is the most appropriate assessment at a particular point in time. The aim is to broaden a general knowledge base of different assessments available and to enhance the quality/transferability of completed assessments. We all have limited time to assess – this master class will help you to get the most from your assessment and conserve valuable nursing time. Most of all the concept of the ‘one size fits all’ assessment will be challenged in order to introduce new ways of assessing.

One of the nation’s defining features is that people love to talk about drinking – but are we having the right kind of conversation? Alcohol Concern has a set the theme 'it’s time to talk about drinking' for Alcohol Awareness Week. This gives great flexibility to have all kinds of conversations about the health risks, social problems, stigmas and taboos associated with talking about the dangers of alcohol. It also allows local groups to focus on different areas.

Raising awareness events across the UK. The fundamental value of human protection and justice celebrated on Human Rights Day is at the core of our work with refugees. So we are calling on our friends to champion Human Rights Day with us by hosting a RefuTEA on Friday 10th December. We are asking you to mobilise your local community, family and friends to raise awareness that people seeking asylum in the UK have the right to be treated with respect and humanity; and you will be raising vital funds for our work with asylum seekers and refugees. RefuTEA hosts during Refugee Week had lots of fun whilst raising thousands of pounds from their RefuTEA Parties. Please join them and stand up for the human rights of refugees on Human Rights Day. You can get more information on hosting a RefuTEA on our website. Order a RefuTEA host pack or drop us a line or call us on 020 7346 1203 if you have any questions. http://www.refugeecouncil.org.uk/supportourwork/fundraise_for_us/refutea_parties.htm?dm_i=I6P,A4CW,31JKEL,RI9G,1
