The first ever Viral Meningitis Week is being held between 6 and 10 May 2013.

Launched by UK charity, the Meningitis Trust, this annual event, entitled Take it Seriously, aims to improve vital awareness of viral meningitis and its true impact, after a recent survey showed that 97% of its victims are left with debilitating after-effects.

The Meningitis Trust has a number of free services that are tailored to victims of viral meningitis, including funding complementary therapies, counselling, one-to-one support and home visits. Services can be accessed via the charity’s free 24-hour nurse-led helpline on 0808 80 10 388 or www.meningitis-trust.org/support. The PROMs masterclasses hold the key to understanding measurement of health outcomes and of how organisations will be judged. Expertise is drawn from a network of clinicians and managers spanning primary and secondary care. This network has pioneered the implementation of outcome data collection across a diverse range of specialties including respiratory rehabilitation, major trauma, orthopaedic surgery and mental health. The long term condition (LTC) masterclass will concentrate on disease where longitudinal data collection is essential to assess response over time and allow clinicians and patients to tailor their individual treatment. We look at tools used in stroke medicine and diabetes, working through examples where they have been used in routine clinical practice, which can be emulated in other organisations. We also share our experience and strategies for maintaining patient engagement, which is fundamental to collecting accurate data.

Sandwell Health’s Other Economic Summit (SHOES) will convene again to think global and act local to improve health. Our theme this year is better evidence for better public health. Amidst the biggest changes to the NHS since its creation will be what is the best evidence to take forward better Public Health in local government in England? And how can the ideas of evidence based practice impact on other areas of local policy such as education, crime, housing and environmental improvement? And how can these ideas impact on other nations’ health? The SHOES conference is in its 14th year and since its inception the focus has been the economics of health and disease, health and human rights, skills and jobs, environmental justice and health inequalities. SHOES has been the place for challenging debate, discussion and action. This years conference: ‘Better evidence for better public health’ on 13th and 14th June promises to be exciting and thought provoking as public health finds its feet in local government. A new way of working, a new environment and new challenges with ever reducing finances in the face of increased hardship, poverty and health challenges. Most hospitals in the UK have an Acute Medical Unit (AMU), providing high quality, multi-professional care for patients admitted to hospital as emergencies. Those of us who work in the speciality can see the benefits which the AMU and its hardworking staff can provide to patients on a daily basis. However beyond our walls, there is often a poor understanding of the concept of acute medicine. The Society wants to raise awareness of our specialty, so that, in the future the term ‘acute medicine’ will be as familiar to patients and NHS staff as any other aspect of hospital care. In addition to raising awareness of the speciality we believe this will be a great opportunity for AMUs to raise charity funds for the unit, which can be used for equipment, training and other educational activities. We would like as many units as possible to get involved, in order to try to spread the ‘acute medicine message’ to all parts of the UK.

To help promote Bruxim Awareness Week a "Practice Information & Promotion" pack is available on request to all UK dental practices. Bruxism (Tooth Clenching and or Grinding) is a condition that affects around 50% of the population, Bruxism is often stress related and it has been reported recently that there has been a 20% increase in patients suffering with bruxism. It is the main cause of tooth wear and breakage, disorders of the jaw (pain and limited movement) headaches and migraines. Both children and adults are affected, but is most common in 25-44 year olds.
