Dr David Robinson, consultant obstetric anaesthetist, explains that there are various types of epidural.
The injection should not be painful. Once the anaesthetic has numbed the area in which the needle is inserted, women should only feel a pushing sensation or pressure.
The anaesthetist should explain the different types that are available.
